Instagram for business in 2026: a practical playbook
Instagram works best for businesses as a relationship platform: reels find new people, and the profile, Stories and messages turn them into a relationship. Treat the three as one system.
1. Make the profile do the selling
- Name field: your name plus the words your buyers search (Instagram search reads it).
- Bio: who you help, the result, one link to one next step.
- Three pinned posts: your story, a piece of proof shared with permission, your most useful value.
- Highlights: one per case study, plus “how working with us goes”.
2. Make reels people want to send
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has said publicly that shares by direct message are one of the strongest signals for reaching people who do not follow you yet. Make pieces people send to a colleague: a checklist, a sharp opinion, a description of their exact situation. Open with a clear subject and stakes, align the on-screen text, first picture and first line, and confirm the promise in the next sentence.
3. Use trial reels as a testing lab
Where available, trial reels are shown only to non-followers. Post versions of your own video with different spoken hooks and on-screen titles as trials, with auto-share off. After 24 hours, look at watch time and skip rate before views; post the best version to your grid as a new upload — or, if one is a true outlier at around five times your usual trial views, let it run to about 36 hours and share it to everyone. Never use anyone else’s content.
4. Sell in Stories, not in reels
A simple weekly rhythm: a client result (with permission) and a direct invitation once a week, a soft invitation later in the week, and nurture on the other days — behind the scenes, quick fixes, answers to doubts.
5. Measure the right things
Compare each reel with your own median views for that format, and watch saves, sends, real comments, profile visits and enquiries. Ask every enquiry which post brought them.
Stay within the rules
Label paid or gifted content (Japan’s stealth-marketing rules apply from October 2023), do not promise results, and never buy followers.
