How to build trust online: proof, honesty and Japan's stealth-marketing rules
People buy from, subscribe to and recommend those they trust. Every video, post and article either adds to that trust or spends it.
Habits that build trust
- Specific proof over big claims. Show the process, the numbers and the reasoning, not adjectives.
- Admit limits. Saying who you are not right for makes everything else you say more believable.
- Consistency. A steady rhythm and the same facts everywhere — website, channel, profiles — signal a real, reliable business.
- Answer objections in public. The questions people are afraid to ask are the best topics you have.
- Show who is behind it. A real name, a real face and a real address matter, especially to Japanese buyers.
Shortcuts that destroy it
- Fake scarcity ("only two spots left") that is not true.
- Testimonials that are invented, edited beyond recognition, or used without permission.
- Bought views, followers or engagement.
- Promises of results nobody can guarantee.
Japan's stealth-marketing rules
Since 1 October 2023, stealth marketing (ステルスマーケティング) has been regulated under Japan's Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations (景品表示法). If a business is behind a post or video, it must be clear that it is an advertisement. The business that commissioned it is responsible. Label sponsored content clearly, every time.
