Lead magnets that work for service businesses (and Japan’s email rules)

A lead magnet is a free resource worth an email address. For service businesses it works when it solves one specific problem quickly — and when the person clearly agreed to hear from you.

Types that work

ChecklistA short list someone can use today.
TemplateA brief, plan or calendar they can fill in.
CalculatorAnswers “what would this cost or return for me?”
DiagnosticA short self-assessment that shows what to fix first.
GuideA deeper resource for complex topics.

Make it specific

“Download our brochure” is not a lead magnet. “The fifteen-minute website check for clinics: five things that lose bookings” is. Title it as a specific result, for a specific person, in a specific time. Give the big picture and solve one step completely.

Follow it with a welcome sequence

  1. Deliver the resource and say what to expect.
  2. Send your most useful piece on the same topic.
  3. Tell a short story about why you do this work.
  4. Explain a common mistake and how to avoid it.
  5. Show how working together goes, with one simple next step.

Japan’s rules

Marketing email in Japan needs the recipient’s prior consent, clear sender information and an easy way to unsubscribe (特定電子メール法). Use a sign-up form with an explicit consent checkbox, honour unsubscribes immediately, and never add people from bookings, business cards or bought lists. Explain how you use their data in your privacy policy.
