Personal account or expert account? When founders should run two Instagram profiles

Many founders feel torn between posting about their life and posting about their expertise. Sometimes the answer is two accounts — but often it isn’t.

When to consider a split

Consider it only if you genuinely want a personal brand as well as an expert one — for example, when you hold back posts because they would confuse the audience of your current page. If you simply want to be known for your skill and use content to support the business, one focused expert account does the job.

What each account is for

Personal accountYour story, life and how you see the world. Your skill appears, but does not define every post.
Expert accountYour subject: clear explanations, practical lessons and your reasoning. It must make sense to someone who has never heard your story.

Teach for the serious buyer

An expert post is not for the widest reach. Before filming, finish the sentence: “after watching, someone should be able to think differently about…” — then name the decision it helps with. A post with fewer views can still reach the person who asks the right question.

Plan for questions

An expert page attracts questions about your services. Offer a useful free resource that continues the explanation, and answer relevant messages personally. Each post should still teach on its own; not every post needs to sell.
